Some members of the compensation community believe that continuances by joint agreement of the parties will granted as a matter of course. Continuances are only granted for good cause shown. Agreement of the parties in and of itself is not good cause and, absent a valid reason, these requests will be denied.

The Commission is beginning the process of regionalization of the out of town hearings. Although we do not yet have permanent sites we have begun setting cases in two temporary locations. Currently, these are conference rooms in the Holiday Inn in Waldorf for Southern Maryland and the Holiday Inn Express in Cambridge for the Eastern Shore. There is no set timetable for obtaining permanent sites but as soon as they are chosen and/or built the compensation community will be notified. (*See November 27 below)

The Commission relocation approaches. Our new quarters, located at 10 East Baltimore Street (W.R. Grace building) are well under way. The Commission has signed a 10 year lease on the site. We will occupy 5 floors, each with a reception & waiting area: Information Technology occupies the 3rd floor; the new Hearing Rooms and Public Service area are located on the 4th floor; Adjudication on the 5th floor; Self Insurance, Claims & Processing Divisions and the Mail Room on the 6th; Support Services, Fiscal & Personnel Divisions, the Executive and Attorney General's Offices on the 7th (the only public area is the 4th floor). Four Hearing Rooms occupy the 4th floor and this reception area will be equipped with informational video monitors to greet the WCC's customers. The site's infrastructure has been updated to allow the Commission to facilitate its planned web based business processes. The Commission will say goodbye to the site at 6 North Liberty Street (since 1984) in early December 2000.

The MD WCC Re-Registration of all attorneys practicing before the Commission is still ongoing. Compliance has reached about 50%, but 100% is required. Many new registrants have also signed on. Those not re-registered risk the loss of notification of important news and changes of note to the workers' compensation community. Mailing addresses must be verified and email addresses collected for the distribution of the WCC Newsletter and other worthy notices impacting the community. Sign on now and there is no processing fee. Use the link on the entry page (HOME above).
