The Workers’ Compensation Commission welcomes Commissioner, Jeffrey C. Herwig
Appointed on February 17, 2006 to a 12-year term by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., approved by the full Senate on March 24, 2006.
Commissioner Herwig's appointment is effective July 1, 2006.
Jeffrey C. Herwig graduated from Loyola College Summa Cum Laude in 1978 and his earned his JD from University of Maryland School of Law in 1981. He clerked for Judge James A. Perrott in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. Thereafter, he joined Smith, Somerville & Case where he became a partner in 1989. In 1991, he founded Herwig & Humphreys, LLC with the late Robert L. Humphreys, Jr. where he was the managing partner until he was appointed to the Commission by Governor Robert Ehrlich in 2006. Throughout his 25 years in legal practice, Jeff has concentrated in the defense of workers’ compensation claims in Maryland, the District of Columbia and in the Federal Longshore and Harbor Workers’ system. He has been Chair of the Maryland State Bar Association Section of Negligence and Workers’ Compensation, Chair of the Joint Task Force for Injured Workers Rehabilitation, President of the District of Columbia Association of Insurance Compensation Attorneys, board member of various civic organizations, author of the annual supplement to the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Handbook (Gilbert and Humphreys; Michie Pub. 1993), author of articles on vocational rehabilitation issues and frequent lecturer on Maryland and District of Columbia workers’ compensation law, vocational rehabilitation, social security disability and related topics.
